Buying Real Estate As A Widow
Going It Alone In Your Golden Years: A True Story!
This is the true story written by my mother (and best friend) Joan von Weien.
I had never purchased a home on my own until after my husband died unexpectedly, after building our dream retirement home. After staying there alone for four years, I knew I wanted to move. It occurred to me as I was writing this, that most women do not buy a home
Since most women buy a home infrequently, one feels a little behind the learning curve, especially in an unknown market, with changing interest rates, insurance, and taxes and so many other important things to consider. It is important to have someone who considers and answers our questions without judgment. We are not realtors, and we are unaware of changes in codes and laws, and differences from area to area. What we have to consider one year, may be entirely different the following year.
This last year and a half, we have seen the extraordinary shifts in home values, driven by the economic downturn. It is especially valuable to have a knowledgeable realtor to hold your hand without making you feel like you can't ask questions. I think most women realtors take more time, and see your new home from the safety angle, your children's new school, which homes are in the best districts, etc.
Moving alone can be a jarring and chaotic experience, and knowing that the financial details of the home purchase have been addressed helps to keep the concerns down. "Did I make the best choice?" In my case, the answer is a resounding "YES! Would I do it all again, ABSOLUTELY!".
